Last evening I became the grandmother to my 6th grandson bring my grand total of grandchildren to 9!! I was allowed to do his Wiccaning with in minutes of his birth so his ancestors are already watching over him along with my son and daughter-in-law also our large extended family.
I asked for prayers for my daughter-in-law (D-I-L) as she had to have an emergency c-section due do preeclampsia (women in the later stages of their pregnancy can all of a sudden develop high blood pressure that can be life threatening to mother and the child she is carrying) and gestational diabetes. As she was adopted she has none of her medical history background but I am not to worried about my grandson as my D-I-L has been healthy but a little overweight her whole life.
Please do not share this post with anywhere else due to a request from my son. Thank you.
“Here is no protective circle, no prayers, no names of power; we have left the strained company of the magicians and are back in the countryside where the fairies are natural company.” – K. Briggs, in The Anatomy of Puck chapter 8, discussing a folk ritual to obtain a fairy companion.
There is a long history of witches working with fairies in various ways, both learning from them and being in service to them. In modern paganism we more often see this relationship played out very differently, with the Good Folk being approached from a more ceremonial magic perspective or treated as a kind of spirit guide or ally. When we look to folklore and early modern witchcraft we see a different picture and it is this one that I base my own personal practice on.
If you’ve been following the last two blog posts, I’ve been covering how to determine whether or not you’re dealing with any hexes/curses/psychic attacks against yourself, and best practices for both psychic and magical hygiene. Now it’s time to cover “how to protect yourself 101”.
First of all, the two best books I’ve found on this topic are by Jason Miller, which is Protection and Reversal Magick. The second is Magickal Protection by Damon Brand. Both are super useful and will go into this topic in far greater detail than I possibly could in a single blog post.
Recently I have been seeing a lot of people on social media asking about psychic protection and shielding. And quite worryingly a few that have made statements along the lines of “I am always picking up on the energy from others. I find it totally draining but I have just accepted that is the way I am”. No, no, no! Please don’t put up with it, there really is no need.
Once you start to work with energy you also become aware and open yourself up to certain energies. You may start to become more sensitive to the emotions of those around you. And you might attract the energies of those that you would prefer to keep away.
However, I want to state now, that in my experience, a true psychic attack is extremely rare. What you may find is people that drain you without evening knowing they are doing it.
This is to be done after you have blessed your home so you know all negative energy and/or beings are out of it.
The easiest way to make sure your home is protected from anything negative or evil is to put a mixture of salt, bay leaves or basil, and garlic in the four cardinal points (North, East, South, and West) of your home. If you want to use a compass to make sure you have the exact location of the direction that’s fine but as long as you know it is the basic area of the direction that is fine too. Personally, I used a compass the first time and then put a little dot with a Sharpie on the baseboard just above the floor so I do not need the compass again until the dots wear away.
Than using regular table salt walk clockwise around your home starting with the door that people use to enter or exit the house more often. Call upon Hekate to keep the people in the home safe from all harm and to walk with you as you sprinkle a thin layer in a circle completely surrounding your home overlap the place you start at to make sure the circle is complete. Make sure you put a little extra salt by every entrance into your home including window sills. Is there is any type of fence or other obstruction be sure to overlap the salt when moving around it so there is no break in the warding.
Last come to protecting the land that surrounds your home to do this I again use table salt and walk clockwise around the edge of my property line asking Hekate to keep your family safe when they are in the yard for whatever reason. Make sure the salt overlaps where you began at. I usually start in the Northeast corner of our yard. If you have a fence in the way of walking from front to back – sprinkle the salt on top of the fence than walk around to your backyard and start by sprinkling a little more salt on top of the fence so there is no break in the ward, do this everytime you need to stop and start the outside lines.
Remember when you are done with the protection wards to thank Hekate for her help.
