Drawing down the Moon

δραςινγ-δοςν-τηε-μοον

Drawing down the Moon (also known as drawing down the Goddess) is a central ritual in many contemporary Wiccan traditions. During the ritual, a coven’s High Priestess enters a trance and requests that the Goddess or Triple Goddess, symbolized by the Moon, enter her body and speak through her. The High Priestess may be aided by the High Priest, who invokes the spirit of the Goddess. During her trance, the Goddess speaks through the High Priestess.

The name most likely comes from a depiction of two women and the moon on an ancient Greek vase, believed to date from the second century BCE.

In classical times of ancient Greece, ancient Thessalian witches were believed to control the moon, according to the tract: “If I command the moon, it will come down; and if I wish to withhold the day, night will linger over my head; and again, if I wish to embark on the sea, I need no ship, and if I wish to fly through the air, I am free from my weight.”

The Orphic hymn to Selene (Moon)

One of these songs is the Orphic Hymn to the goddess Selene, namely the Moon. The text could be also considered as a spell one could address to the Blood Moon.

“Hear, Goddess queen, diffusing silver light, bull-horn’d and wand’ring thro’ the gloom of Night.

With stars surrounded, and with circuit wide Night’s torch extending, thro’ the heav’ns you ride:

Female and Male with borrow’d rays you shine, and now full-orb’d, now tending to decline.

Mother of ages, fruit-producing Moon [Mene], whose amber orb makes Night’s reflected noon:

Lover of horses, splendid, queen of Night, all-seeing pow’r bedeck’d with starry light.

Lover of vigilance, the foe of strife, in peace rejoicing, and a prudent life:

Fair lamp of Night, its ornament and friend, who giv’st to Nature’s works their destin’d end.

Queen of the stars, all-wife Diana hail! Deck’d with a graceful robe and shining veil;

Come, blessed Goddess, prudent, starry, bright, come moony-lamp with chaste and splendid light,

Shine on these sacred rites with prosp’rous rays, and pleas’d accept thy suppliant’s mystic praise.”

The Witches of Thessaly

By Hypatia

Written for Coven Life

4th June 2018

Thessaly was a region in antiquity that was mentioned in Homers Odyssey. There he described the already infamous witches of Thessaly that were active from the 1st to the 3rd Century BCE. Before him both Plato and Socrates spoke of them. These women were both feared and revered.

So who were the Thessalian Witches?

In the centre of it all was the Goddess Hecate. Servants and priestesses of Hecate were already famous for their witchcraft. Thessaly was located in the northern region of Greece that bordered Macedonia. It was considered to be the home of witchcraft and magic, a place where the first known historical Witch-Cult was recorded.

The Thessalian Witches had incredible Magickal abilities, sayings, prayers and incantations mentioned in Homers Odyssey that are still till this day used by modern practitioners of Magick to draw down the moon.

“If I command the Moon it will come down: and if I wish to withhold the day, night will linger over my head: and again, if I wish to embark on the sea, I need no ship, and if I wish to fly through the air, I am free from my weight”.

Wow, it looks like witches have been flying through the air since the 2nd century BC according to this extract from a Greek text.

The red headed women of Thessaly would use the magical powers of the moon. The Magickal concept of the moon was that it had the ability to perspire Magickal sweat, which in the hand of a witch revealed truly wondrous powers. There was a Magick called virus lunare, through which the moon could be invoked and a liquid secreted from it and then dropped on the herbs. This was the ambrosia that was acquired during the waxing period of the moon and was part of some of the most famous potions ever created throughout history.

The Thessalian Witches were mainly women, however there is also indication of male members as well.

These servants and priestesses of the Goddess were attributed for their all-powerful Love Potions and their aphrodisiacs, ones that rarely come without consequence. Some of these preparations could “make someone crazy” and even impotent, so as legend has it .

Some of the less desirable traits of the Witches of Thessaly included, cannibalism and traits of scatological nature. I can see similarities where the trickling down of descriptive and I believe deceptive characteristics that were adopted for the persecution of witches in European “Christendom” held steadfast from the ancient times.

One of the famous Witches of Thessaly included Aglaonike, a natural philosopher in c 200 BC. She was a master of the arts predicting Lunar cycles that included lunar eclipses. Armed with this knowledge, she was able to, what others believed to control the moon. This power gained her both respect and fear from not only the everyday person but heads of state and country. Now that’s wisdom in all it’s glory!! It’s no wonder these women and men were so feared.

Throughout history the Witches of Thessaly have endured much literary criticism that was written from a range of perspectives, interpretations and even theoretical structures. Either way their stories that were once fact adorning the temples of Hecate, soon became history, then legend and finally mythology. The Priestesses and servants of the Great Goddess have left us with their incredible legacy, one that till this day connects the feminine aspect of humanity with the moon and spans globally throughout generations. Take what you may from the historical interpretations and stories of the Thessalian Witches, they were and are legendary. They were Priestesses and servants of the Great Goddess, a Goddess that was venerated and worshiped throughout the world in many different aspects . Remnants of their legacy is evident in our modern understanding of the historical concepts of earth based religions. Ones that are clearly still needed and yearned from humanity till this day.

Additional information for the recent Gathering of the Blue Moon eclipse, January 31st.

Merry Meet Coven members.

Thank you for attending the Gathering to honor the super moon eclipse on the 31st.  It was an absolute pleasure and honor to have all of you on board.

In continuation with the ritual, Lady Beltane requested I make some further suggestions to help you better understand what you may choose to do with the stone. The Talisman you have charged with your mantra is your guide to assist you to move through your metamorphosis. As mentioned in the gathering post, continue to use the mantra and stone 3 days after the full moon as this is the most potent time. This will assist you to connect on a deeper level to yourself and of course the Goddess within.

Your mantra can dictate which hand you hold the stone in when you recite over the next 3 days. If it is one of receiving such as wanting more guidance, wanting personal healing, wanting respect, if it is for the self than it is in the left hand. This is the hand for receiving. If however your mantra was for you to give more compassion to others or give more respect to others or give love than you can hold this in your right hand. Alternatively like Lady Beltane mentioned you could just hold it in your power hand if all this is confusing. Your power hand is the one that you would use the most, are you left or right handed? Also traditionally the right hand is the path of the light and the left is the path of the dark. Neither are good or bad they just are, and choosing either or is fine. The intention is working from your heart space to charge you Talisman with the guidance of the Great Goddess and the God.

Your Talisman: If you feel comfortable carrying the stone with you than please do so. It is important that it stays with you as much as possible over the next 3 days while you recite your mantra. Sleeping with it if you can’t have it on you during the day is also fine. After the 3 days you can place it on your alter or in you Witch bag to remind you of what it represents. If you choose, carry the stone for as long as you feel. It will tell you what you need to do. If you are unable to carry the Talisman than please once again visualize the Cor Leonis and the elements you inscribed. These symbols are triggers, little reminders of the powerful potential that is every human being!

Your candle: It would be wonderful to allow your candle to burn as long as possible. It’s not as much the size but the intention. If you feel that you need to light a white candle whenever you choose to recite you mantra then please do so. You don’t need to let that burn all the way that is up to you. The light represents the guidance of the Goddess. Having her presence over the next 3 days is a beautiful feeling. Re-igniting that feeling whenever you recite your mantra by lighting another white candle is beautiful. If you need to recite your mantra and don’t have a candle please just visualize a light, once again this is from your heart space which is the domain of the Great Goddess.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact me and remember to allow yourself to follow your intuition. Listen to your inner Goddess and God. They are you and you are them. As without so within as above so below.

Blessings to all

Merry Part until be Merry Meet again

Magic of the Moon

This article was written in 2015 by Unknow on the moonslipper.com.

Since time began, we have been using the Moon to live our lives by

– to tune into the Earth’s natural rhythms

– to use the magic of the moon phases for living, growing crops, magic rituals, health and so much more.

Magic of the Moon Basics

The Moon completes a full orbit around the Earth every 29.5 days.

During the New Moon phase the position of the moon means no light is reflected off the Sun, so it is not visible at all.

The Full Moon appears 14 to 15 days after the New Moon and appears as a glorious glowing white circle in the night sky.

This phase reflects the maximum amount of light from the Sun.

The Phases of the Moon

The phases of the Moon are:

  • New Moon
  • Waxing Moon (when the Moon gets bigger in the sky, a narrow crescent growing from right to left)
  • Waning Moon (when the Full Moon is decreasing in size, moving back towards the New Moon, gradually changing to a decreasing crescent from right to left)
  • Gibbous Moon is the period between the first quarter and Full Moon and between the Full Moon and last quarter.

September 1, 2016 Luna Eclipse/New Moon

Tonight is not only time for New or Dark Moon magic, it is also a Lunar Eclipse. With that in mind, I wanted to remind you that spells and/or rituals will be strong than usual and a different type of energy will be at work. Spellwork under an eclipse should only be done by witches with advanced training as it takes a lot more focus and intention to have the spell work hopefully right than most beginners to The Craft have learned to do. Also just because you are an experienced witch does not guarantee your spell working properly when done under a Lunar Eclipse. Beginner/novice witches would better use this time in a mediation session inside a sacred circle.

Besides the informational posts the follow this one, here is a link for a general search on Google for lunar eclipse spells and magic: https://www.google.com/search?q=lunar+eclipse+spells&oq=lunar+eclipse+spells&aqs=chrome..69i57.13703j0j4&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

The Witches Magick for the 10th Day of the Mead Moon – Mead Moon Dream Bath

Mead Moon Dream Bath

Buttermilk encourages a smooth and creamy complexion. Just before you go to sleep, take this dream bath. Use this bath to empower, enrich and uplift you.

For this spell, you will need one-quarter cup of buttermilk powder, six drops of jasmine-scented oil, and one-quarter cup of sea salt.
As you stir all the ingredients into the bathwater chant:

Moon of Mead, empower my dreams.

Now, step into the bathwater. Soak for several minutes. As you do, say three times:

May the powers of the Mead Moon
Empower, enrich, and uplift me
By the lunar light, so shall it be!

Anoint yourself with a few drops of the scented oil after you towel off. Imagine being empowered, enriched, and uplifted by the natural powers of the moon and stars. Continue doing this as you drift to sleep.
